Berezan Island

Berezan Island lies in the Black Sea at the entrance of the Dnieper-Bug Estuary in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. In 647 BC, Greek settlers from Miletus founded a colony here known as Borysthenes, making it one of the earliest Greek outposts in the northern Black Sea. The settlement originally spanned up to 20 hectares, though coastal erosion has significantly reduced the island's extent. Over a century of excavations have uncovered approximately 750 burials from the 6th-5th centuries BC, early dugout dwellings that evolved into Greek-style buildings, and evidence of trade with Scythian tribes. The island also became a major cult center for the worship of Achilles Pontarches during the Roman Imperial period.
