Roman Villa of Can Llauder

A Roman villa near Mataro (ancient Iluro), Barcelona, discovered in 1961 by Maria Ribas i Bertran and declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1964. Built around the time of Augustus (late 1st century BC) and remodelled in the early 3rd century AD, the villa featured rich marble decoration, mosaic-paved floors, stucco, and painted walls. The excavated state rooms reveal an atrium, inner courtyard, peristyle columns, a hypocaust heating system, baths, latrines, and sewers. An inscription links the villa to Gaius Marius. Later designated a National Heritage Site (BCIN), it was opened to the public in 1988 and continues to yield new finds from ongoing excavations.
