Tarragona

Tarragona, ancient Tarraco, is the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula and served as capital of the provinces of Hispania Citerior and Hispania Tarraconensis. Its Archaeological Ensemble was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, comprising 14 monuments including an amphitheatre, circus, aqueduct, forum, and necropolis. The city was a model for Roman provincial urban planning across the empire. Pre-Roman Cyclopean walls near the Cuartel de Pilatos suggest even earlier Iberian occupation.
