Pont del Diable

The Pont del Diable (Devil's Bridge) in Martorell, Catalonia, was originally built c. 10 BC by Roman legions III Macedonica, VI Victrix, and X Gemina as part of the Via Augusta crossing the Llobregat river. It was the only bridge in the lower Llobregat valley until the 14th century. A Gothic replacement was constructed in 1283, and the bridge also features the remains of a Roman triumphal arch. Destroyed during the Spanish Civil War by retreating Republican forces, the central arch was reconstructed in 1961-1965. Demolition of adjoining houses revealed Roman wall remains and the Sant Bartomeu chapel archaeological site.
