Amaya, Burgos

A hilltop settlement at roughly 1,000 m elevation in Sotresgudo, Burgos, northern Spain, with occupation dating to the Late Bronze Age Cogotas I culture. It served as one of the principal strongholds of the Cantabri Celtic tribes and played a key role in the Cantabrian Wars (29-16 BC) against Rome. After Roman conquest, a military detachment linked to Legio IV Macedonica was stationed there. Amaya later became the capital of the Visigothic Duchy of Cantabria until King Leovigild captured and destroyed the city in 574 AD.
