Roman Villa of Almoinhas

A Roman villa in the parish of Loures, near Lisbon, occupied from the 1st to 5th century AD and considered one of the most important Roman-period sites in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. First discovered in 1990 during construction of a supermarket access road, systematic excavations in 1995 revealed burial tombs, salting tanks, walls, and an amphora containing Roman coins and ceramic tiles. A 2004 intervention by the archaeological company ERA uncovered a necropolis, canalization, three oven tanks, and indications of a residential zone, adding to understanding of this substantial Roman agricultural and industrial complex.
