Tabasqueno

El Tabasqueno is a Chenes Maya archaeological site in Hopelchen municipality, Campeche, first documented by explorer Teobert Maler in 1887. Founded around the 2nd century AD, it peaked between the 7th and 10th centuries. The principal structure is a two-story Palace with 10 chambers and an elaborate Chenes-style zoomorphic Itzamna facade adorned with rain god masks. The Tower Group features a rare square tower with ramp, one of only three or four known in the Chenes region. Water came from two aguadas, caves, and underground chultunes. Hurricane Gilbert severely damaged the site in 1988, but INAH restorations have since recovered the main Palace.
