Santa Rosa Xtampak

Santa Rosa Xtampak is a major Maya archaeological site in Campeche, Mexico, and the former capital of the Chenes region. Settled from the early 4th century BC, it flourished between 600 and 900 AD, controlling approximately 144 square miles with a peak population of 10,000. Its Palace is the site's most impressive structure, featuring 44 rooms across three stories with rare interior stairways and a monumental zoomorphic mask portal. Eight stelae recovered from the South Plaza span 646 to 911 AD. The Chenes architectural style is characterized by elaborate facade decorations including snake-mouth doorways referencing the deity Itzamna.
