Becan

Becan is a Maya city in Campeche, Mexico that flourished from approximately 550 BC to 1200 AD[1]. Its most distinctive feature is a massive surrounding ditch and ramparts, unusual among Maya sites, which gave the site its name meaning 'ravine or canyon formed by water' in Yukatek Maya[2]. The site also contains temple structures in the Rio Bec style[1]. Located about 150 km north of Tikal near the center of the Yucatán Peninsula, Becan provides important insights into Classic Maya urbanism and defensive architecture.
