Hormiguero

Hormiguero ("anthill") is a Maya archaeological site in Campeche, Mexico, with 84 identified structures spread along a southwest-northeast axis. Occupied from the Late Preclassic (300 BC), it peaked during the Late Classic (600-800 AD) before abandonment around 950 AD. Structure II features the largest Chenes-style monster portal in the region -- an enormous open-mouthed serpent representing Itzamnaaj framing the central doorway. The site blends Rio Bec and Chenes architectural styles with elaborate zoomorphic facades, and functioned as a dependency of nearby Becan.
