Temple of Atargatis

One of the principal temples of the ancient city of Dura-Europos in eastern Syria, dedicated to Atargatis, ancient Syria's greatest goddess. Dating from approximately AD 100 to 256, the temple features a courtyard with a monumental entrance and three sanctuaries, surrounded by rooms used as chapels and dining halls. A notable limestone relief shows Atargatis enthroned between lions alongside her consort Hadad. Over 30 inscriptions were found, many made by women, reflecting the goddess's strong female following.
