Via degli Inferi - Necropoli Banditaccia

The Via degli Inferi is an ancient Etruscan road carved deeply into the tufa rock, connecting the city of Caere to the Banditaccia Necropolis at Cerveteri. Wall heights reach up to 10 metres in places, with visible wagon wheel ruts and flanking tombs. The Banditaccia Necropolis spans approximately 400 hectares, making it the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean. It contains thousands of burials from the 9th to 3rd century BC, including Villanovan-era tombs, rock-cut trenches, and tumuli. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 alongside Tarquinia.
