Amiternum

Ancient Sabine city in the upper Aterno valley of Abruzzo, Italy, located 9 km from modern L'Aquila. Birthplace of the historian Sallust in 86 BC. Defeated by Rome in 293 BC, the city sat at the junction of four major roads including the Via Salaria and Via Caecilia. Archaeological remains include a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and theatre from the imperial period, along with Christian catacombs on the nearby hill of San Vittorino. The site is now an open-access archaeological park managed by the National Museum of Abruzzo.
