Aufina

Ancient city of the Vestini people in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, mentioned by Pliny as Aufinates Cismontani. Long identified with modern Ofena, recent excavations have relocated the site approximately 5 km further south near Capestrano, where a vast Vestini funerary necropolis was discovered in 1934, yielding nearly a hundred tombs. The territory was crossed by the Via Claudia Nova, built by Emperor Claudius in 47 AD connecting Rome to the Adriatic. Aufina remained a bishop's see into the 6th century AD.
