Amphitheatre Alba Fucens

A Roman amphitheatre measuring 96 by 79 metres at Alba Fucens, a Latin colony founded in 303 BC at 1,000 m elevation in Abruzzo, Italy. Built during the reign of Tiberius (14-37 AD) and financed by Naevius Sutorius Macro, prefect of the Praetorian Guard, who was born at Alba in 21 BC. The colony, established with 6,000 settlers, was enclosed by impressive polygonal masonry walls and sat on the strategic Via Valeria linking Rome to the Adriatic. Excavated from 1949 by the University of Louvain, with new digs since 2007 uncovering a painted calendar.
