The second-largest Roman amphitheatre after the Colosseum, located in ancient Capua (modern Santa Maria Capua Vetere), and possibly the model for the Colosseum itself. Its axes measure 170 by 140 metres with an arena of 75 by 45 metres, and it held approximately 60,000 spectators. The site housed Rome's most famous gladiator school, where in 73 BC Spartacus and over 70 enslaved gladiators launched their revolt, threatening Rome for nearly two years. Much of its stone was reused in the Norman period for building in nearby Capua.
