GreeceA healing sanctuary on the south slope of the Acropolis, founded in 420/419 BC by Telemachos of Acharnai during the Peloponnesian War, likely prompted by the Athenian plague. Dedicated to Asclepius and Hygieia, patients slept in a Doric stoa hoping the god would visit them in dreams and cure their ailments. The complex included a temple, altar, Ionic dining stoa, and a sacred spring. A marble stele known as the Telemachos Monument records the god's arrival from Epidaurus.
