GreeceBuilt after 490 BC, the Older Parthenon was the first attempt to construct a sanctuary for Athena Parthenos on the Acropolis of Athens. It was erected on a massive limestone foundation that extended and leveled the southern summit of the Acropolis, replacing an earlier hekatompedon structure. The temple would have stood alongside the archaic temple dedicated to Athena Polias.[1]
