The smallest and earliest fully Ionic temple on the Athenian Acropolis, designed by the architect Kallikrates and built between 426 and 421 BC. Positioned on a bastion at the southwestern edge of the Acropolis, it was dedicated to Athena Nike (Athena of Victory). Its relief-carved frieze depicted the Battle of Marathon on the south side and a gathering of gods on the east. Around 410 BC, marble parapets with carved Nikai were added around the bastion. Demolished by the Ottomans in 1686 and reconstructed in 1834 after Greek independence.
