The Chalkotheke was a large rectangular treasury building on the Athenian Acropolis, erected soon after 400 BC to store bronze and metal possessions of the city. Located southwest of the Parthenon adjacent to the south wall, it measured approximately 43 m long and 14 m wide, fronted by a Doric portico of 4.5 m width. Ancient inscriptions record it housed bronze vessels for religious processions, military equipment including helmets and shields from victories, bronze statues, ritual objects such as kraters and braziers, and weights and measures. Only scant limestone foundations and rock-cut foundation trenches survive today.
