Kalaureia

Sanctuary of Poseidon on a plateau 200 m above sea level on the island of Poros in the Saronic Gulf, Greece. The center of an amphictyony of seven city-states including Athens, Aegina, and Epidaurus. The Late Archaic Doric temple (ca. 520 BC) measured 14.5 x 27 m with 6x12 columns of poros limestone. Famous as the site where the orator Demosthenes committed suicide in 322 BC while fleeing Macedonian persecution. First excavated in 1894 by Swedish archaeologists, with modern campaigns resuming in 1997.
