Ex voto of the Tarentines

A bronze sculptural offering dedicated at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi around 473 BC by the Spartan colony of Taras (modern Taranto, southern Italy) to commemorate their victory over the indigenous Messapian tribes. The monument rested on a 12-meter-long pedestal along the Sacred Way and included bronze horses and statues of captive women. The offering exemplifies how distant Greek colonies maintained religious and cultural ties to the mainland, using Delphi as a venue for publicly displaying their military achievements and piety to Apollo.
