Athenian Treasury, Delphi

Small Doric treasury built entirely of Parian marble along the Sacred Way at Delphi, Greece, dating to circa 490 BC. Traditionally attributed to spoils from the Battle of Marathon, its inscription reads "The Athenians to Apollo from the Medes". Thirty metopes depict the labours of Theseus and Heracles, representing the earliest large-scale sculptural depiction of Theseus. Reconstructed by French archaeologists in 1903-1906 using four-fifths of the original stone; the metopes on-site are replicas, with originals in the Delphi Museum.
