Megalithic Tombs in Haldensleben Forest

The Megalithic Tombs in Haldensleben Forest form the largest concentration of megalithic monuments in central Europe, with approximately 80 Neolithic graves in a 5x5 km area southwest of Haldensleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Dating to 3500-3000 BC, they were built by settlers of the Funnel Beaker culture who brought agriculture, weaving, and pottery traditions from northwestern Europe. The recently reconstructed Kusterberg tomb features an 11 m long, 2 m wide burial chamber built from seven capstones totaling 13 tonnes and 19 orthostats. Excavations have yielded jewelry and tools spanning multiple periods, indicating centuries of continuous ceremonial use.
