Sparsholt Roman Villa

Sparsholt Roman Villa was a Roman estate near Sparsholt, Hampshire, about 4 miles west of Winchester (Venta Belgarum), crossed by the Roman road to Old Sarum. It began as a single rectangular aisled building in the mid-to-late 2nd century and evolved into a courtyard villa with a main house, barn, and bath house before abandonment in the late 4th century. Excavated by David Johnston from 1965 to 1972, it yielded a near-intact 4th-century geometric mosaic and painted wall plaster, now displayed at Winchester City Museum. A reconstruction of the aisled building stands at Butser Ancient Farm.
