Clausentum

Clausentum was a Roman port town at modern Bitterne Manor, Southampton, founded no later than AD 70 to serve as a port facility for Winchester (Venta Belgarum). Excavations in 1935 and 1951-54 by Molly Cotton revealed a 1st-2nd century settlement with defensive walls erected c. 280-290 AD. Artifacts include a bronze Hercules, an altar to the Celtic goddess Ancasta, and a clay Venus. A rare Roman pier with 179 timber piles was dendrochronologically dated to 20 BC-318 AD. The town was abandoned c. 410 AD.
