Washing Wells Roman Fort

Washing Wells was a Roman fort in Britannia, discovered from aerial photographs in 1970 southeast of Whickham in Gateshead, overlooking the Team Valley. The trapezoid fort measures approximately 149 by 125 m (1.8 hectares) and shows at least two occupation phases visible in three distinct ditch systems. It likely served as an eastward extension of the Stanegate frontier system in the late 1st century AD, and was probably abandoned when the garrison relocated to Segedunum (Wallsend) upon the construction of Hadrian's Wall c. 125 AD. The fort remains unexcavated but retains significant buried remains.
