Washing Wells Roman Fort

Washing Wells was a Roman fort in Britannia, discovered from aerial photographs in 1970 southeast of Whickham in Gateshead, overlooking the Team Valley [1] [2] [3]. The trapezoid fort measures approximately 149 by 125 m (1.8 hectares) and shows at least two occupation phases visible in three distinct ditch systems [1] [2] [3] [4]. It likely served as an eastward extension of the Stanegate frontier system in the late 1st century AD [3] [4]. The fort remains unexcavated but retains significant buried remains [1] [3].
