Aldgate

Aldgate was a Roman gate in London Wall, constructed in the 1st–2nd century AD on the eastern side of the city[1]. The gate controlled the thoroughfare leading to Colchester and Essex, serving as a major entry point to Roman Londinium[1][2]. It probably had two circular towers and stood at the corner of modern Duke's Place[1]. Medieval Aldgate developed from this Roman origin and gave its name to Aldgate High Street, now part of the A11 road[1].
