Keston Roman Villa

The Keston Roman villa is an archaeological site in the London Borough of Bromley, originating from an Iron Age settlement that developed into a Roman villa complex. Excavated between 1967 and 1990 by the West Kent Border Archaeology Group, the site includes several buildings and a 3rd-century AD mausoleum. The main tomb (Tomb 1) is a substantial circular structure nearly 9 metres across, originally painted bright red. Three sarcophagi were found, including one with a small lead coffin containing cremated bones. The villa was reburied for conservation, but the tombs remain exposed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
