Wednesbury

A market town in the West Midlands whose name derives from Old English meaning "Woden's Fort," one of the few English places named after a pre-Christian deity. Church Hill is believed to have hosted an Iron Age hillfort, and a large ditch excavated at St Mary's Road in 2008 predating the early medieval period supports this interpretation. The fortification may have been reused by Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, as an Anglo-Saxon burh in the early 10th century.
