Archaeological Site of Tamassos

One of the ten ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, near modern Politiko, likely the Temese mentioned by Homer as the island's principal copper market. Two monumental 6th-century BC royal tombs carved in limestone show Phoenician and Egyptian influences, and yielded six oversized lion and sphinx sculptures. The site also preserves a temple of Aphrodite and copper-smelting installations with slag heaps attesting to its industrial wealth.
