Kition

Kition was an ancient city-kingdom on the southern coast of Cyprus, in present-day Larnaca, established by Mycenaean Achaean settlers in the 13th century BC. Phoenicians from Tyre revived the city in the 9th century BC, making it the capital of a Cypriot-Phoenician kingdom. The Kathari site preserves remains of five ancient temples dedicated to Astarte and Heracles-Melqart, while the Bamboula acropolis features ship sheds for triremes and a sanctuary dating to at least the 9th century BC. The city was closely linked to copper trade and maritime commerce. Zeno of Citium, founder of Stoic philosophy, was born here c. 334 BC.
