Karfi is a Late Minoan IIIC settlement in the Dikti Mountains of eastern Crete, Greece, dating to approximately 1200–1100 BC at the onset of the Greek "Dark Ages."[1] The site sits about 1,100 meters above sea level on a prominent limestone knob overlooking the northern entrance to the Lasithi Plateau.[1] While evidence suggests earlier Middle Minoan use as a peak sanctuary, Karfi is primarily known as one of the largest and most extensively excavated towns from this transitional period.[1] The dramatic mountain setting has been compared to Peru's Machu Picchu.[1]
