Biannus

Biannus (or Biannos, Bienna) was an inland polis (city-state) of ancient Crete, listed among the 22 cities of Crete in the 6th-century Byzantine geographer Hierocles [1]. Located in eastern Crete, the city stood 170 stadia from Hierapytna and 270 stadia from Leben according to the Stadiasmus Maris Magni [1]. According to myth, the city derived its name from the violent contest between the giants Otus and Ephialtes and Ares, which allegedly occurred nearby [1]. The city minted its own coins during the Hellenistic period, evidence of its political and economic significance [1].
