Tauresium (modern Gradiste) is an archaeological site near the village of Taor, approximately 20 km southeast of Skopje, North Macedonia. It is the birthplace of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (c. 482 AD) and Ostrogothic King Theodahad (480 AD). The oldest structures date to the 4th century AD, including a castle with four towers known as Tetrapirgia. Destroyed in an earthquake in 518 AD centered near Skupi, the site was rebuilt by Justinian as a tribute to his homeland. Discovered by British archaeologist Arthur Evans in the late 19th century.
