Bargala

Bargala is an archaeological site in the Bregalnica River valley on the northern slopes of Plačkovica Mountain, 15.5 km east of Štip in North Macedonia [1]. The settlement, with a Thracian-derived name, evolved into a significant Roman and early Byzantine city in the province of Macedonia Secunda [1]. An inscription documents the construction of its city gate in 371/372 AD [1]. Between the 4th and 6th centuries, Bargala flourished as a major religious centre, hosting a bishopric with a central basilica complex and four additional suburban basilicas [1].
