Estipeon

Estipeon (ancient Astibus) was a Paeonian settlement in the area of modern Stip, North Macedonia. The name Astibos first appears in accounts by ancient chronicler Polyaenus, who recorded that Paeonian kings performed coronation rituals by bathing in the Astibo (today's Bregalnica) river. During Emperor Tiberius's reign (14-37 AD), Estipeon is mentioned as an important station on the Roman road from Stobi to Pautalia, also marked on the 4th-century Tabula Peutingeriana. Scholars locate the ancient settlement on the eastern slopes of Isar hill in Stip's old town. The name evolved from Astibo through Byzantine Stipeon to modern Stip.
