During Emperor Tiberius's reign (14-37 AD), Estipeon is mentioned as an important station on the Roman road from Stobi to Pautalia [1] [2]. Scholars locate the ancient settlement in Stip's old town [2] [4]. The name evolved from Astibo through Byzantine Stipeon to modern Stip [1].
