The Hellenistic-Roman Theatre at Nea Paphos, Cyprus, was built c. 300 BC by the Ptolemies of Alexandria on a hillside in the northeast of the ancient walled city. Spanning 90 metres wide and seating over 8,000 spectators, it underwent at least five major phases of renovation over its 650-year lifespan. At its peak under the Antonine emperors (2nd century AD), the stage featured a majestic marble facade. Abandoned after the devastating 365 AD earthquake, the University of Sydney has excavated the site since 1995.
