Celsa - Roman City

Celsa (Colonia Victrix Iulia Lepida) was a Roman city near modern Velilla de Ebro, Aragon, Spain, founded by Lepidus in 42 BC. Renamed Iulia Celsa after Lepidus's exile in 36 BC, it possessed the only stone bridge over the upper Ebro. Excavations revealed paved streets, multi-story houses with courtyards, mosaics, painted stuccos, terra sigillata pottery, a theater, and commercial establishments including warehouses and a bakery. The city minted coins from the 2nd-1st centuries BC bearing Iberian and later Latin inscriptions. Celsa declined after the founding of Caesaraugusta (24 BC) and was abandoned around 70 AD.
