Bilbilis

Augusta Bilbilis was a Roman municipium in Hispania Tarraconensis, built on Cerro de Bambola near modern Calatayud, Spain [1] [2] [3]. Originally a Celtiberian settlement, it was granted municipal status under Augustus, conferring Roman citizenship on all inhabitants [1] [3]. The city is the birthplace of the poet Martial (c. 40 AD), who returned here after 34 years in Rome [1] [4]. Bilbilis reached its zenith in the 1st century AD but declined [1] [2] [5]. Excavations have revealed a theater, forum, thermae with fine frescoes, and townhouses [1] [5].
