Consuegra Dam

The Consuegra Dam is a ruined Roman buttress dam on the River Amarguillo in Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, dating to the 3rd or 4th century AD. The structure was over 630 metres long with a concrete core and rubble facing (opus incertum), standing 4.8 metres high, reinforced by 15 buttresses at its centre. The reservoir held up to 360,000 cubic metres of water, serving both urban supply and irrigation for ancient Consabura. On 11 September 1891, after heavy cloudbursts, the nearly 2,000-year-old dam catastrophically failed, unleashing flood waves through Consuegra that killed approximately 400 inhabitants.
