Valeria, Spain - Roman City

Valeria was an important Roman city founded between 93 and 82 BC by proconsul Gaius Valerius Flaccus, located at 1,000 metres elevation between the Gritos and Zahorra river gorges near modern Cuenca, Spain. The 27-hectare site features a monumental nymphaeum stretching 105 metres -- the largest documented in the western Roman Empire -- along with a forum built atop rain cisterns, a basilica, and a thermal bath complex of over 1,000 m2 with some 40,000 mosaic tiles discovered in 2014. The city prospered from trade in lapis specularis, a translucent gypsum used for Roman windows.
