Barikot

Barikot is a town in the middle course of the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, situated about 20 km from Mingora and the Butkara Stupa [1] [2]. The site contains an ancient citadel reportedly captured by Alexander the Great and an early-historic settlement from c. 600 BC [1] [3]. Since 1984, the Italian Archaeological Mission, founded by Giuseppe Tucci, has been excavating the ruins of the ancient town of Bazira beneath modern Barikot [1] [2] [3].
