MexicoLocated in southernmost Tabasco, Mexico, El Tortuguero was a Classic period Maya city (500-1000 AD) that used the B'aakal emblem glyph, the same title used by the powerful site of Palenque[1]. Despite its historical significance, El Tortuguero has been heavily damaged by looting and modern development; in the 1960s, a cement factory was built directly atop the site[1].
