Tonina

A major Maya city in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, whose seven-tiered acropolis rises over 70 metres, making it one of the tallest pyramids in Mexico. Flourishing during the Late Classic period (600-900 AD), Tonina was a fierce rival of Palenque, renowned for dozens of carved monuments depicting bound captives. The site features the Palace of the Underworld, a labyrinth of 11 passages, and the Frieze of the Dream Lords discovered in 1992. Tonina holds the distinction of bearing the last known Maya Long Count date, carved on Monument 106 and dated to January 15, 909 AD.
