Villa Poppaea

A luxurious Roman seaside villa dating to the mid-1st century BC in Torre Annunziata, part of the ancient town of Oplontis, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The villa is believed to have belonged to Poppaea Sabina, Emperor Nero's second wife, based on an inscribed amphora found at the site. It features magnificent Second and Third Style frescoes, a massive 60-by-17-metre swimming pool, and elaborate gardens. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, the villa remains only partially excavated.
