Suburban Baths, Pompeii

The Suburban Baths (Terme Suburbane) are a publicly owned Roman bathhouse in Pompeii, Italy, built outside the city walls near the Porta Marina, possibly under Emperor Tiberius (14-37 AD). The three-level complex includes a frigidarium, tepidarium, and calidarium, with a heated swimming pool added after the earthquake of 62 AD. The changing room contains eight erotic frescoes, now interpreted not as evidence of a brothel but as a humorous system for helping bathers remember where they stored their clothes. The baths likely served travelers arriving from the nearby port.
