Temple of Augustus, Pozzuoli

A Roman temple in the Rione Terra district of ancient Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli), one of the most important ports of the Roman Mediterranean. Built as a pseudoperipteral hexastyle temple with fluted Corinthian columns and white marble flooring by the wealthy merchant Lucius Calpurnius during the Augustan era. Between the 5th and 6th centuries AD, it was converted into a church dedicated to Saint Proculus of Pozzuoli. Now incorporated into Pozzuoli Cathedral, the site uniquely preserves Roman, early Christian, and Baroque architectural layers.
