Portus Julius

Portus Julius was the first harbour specifically constructed to serve as a base for the Roman western naval fleet, the classis Misenensis[1]. Located near Baiae on the Gulf of Naples, the port was protected by the Misenum peninsula at the north-western end of the gulf[1]. The harbour was named in honour of Julius Caesar, Octavian's adoptive father and great-uncle, as well as the Julian clan[1].
