Miseno

Misenum (modern Miseno) was the largest naval base of the Roman Empire, situated at the northwestern limit of the Bay of Naples in Campania, Italy. Marcus Agrippa established it as a military port around 27 BC under Augustus, replacing the silting Portus Julius. The harbor featured a double basin with the Mare Morto as an inner reserve port. The Piscina Mirabilis, the largest Roman freshwater cistern ever built (12,000 cubic metres), supplied the fleet via the Aqua Augusta aqueduct. Pliny the Elder commanded the fleet here when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
